Prologue
It is the spring of 1796 Richard Sharpe is on his way to India with his regiment, the 33rd foot. On the way, they stop to support the garrison of the Cape Colony. A Dutch force had eluded the Royal Navy blockade of the Texel and was en route to attempt to take the Cape Colony for the Batavian Republic. When the Dutch force is sighted at Saldanha Bay ninety miles to the north, General Craig marches to intercept them. On the march, Sharpe must deal with his new company sergeant, Obadiah Hakeswill and the hazards of the march. Hakeswill is determined to bully Sharpe and Sharpe’s friends.
