Chapter 9

August 16, 1796
DAY 9

Saldanha Bay

Sharpe is correct that the Dutch were in trouble. Craig positioned his guns on the hills so that they can reach all the ships in the harbor. He then marched his infantry down to the beach to deny the Dutch access to land.

A Dutch frigate opened fire on them, but caused no casualties. One of the British howitzers fired on the frigate. After being struck by a few shots, the frigate moved away.

With the British navy outside the harbor and the army holding the port, the Dutch admiral signaled that he would surrender his force.

As the sun set, the British navy entered the harbor to anchor.
