Sharpe's Island

Epilogue

1797 December Calcutta

Arthur Wesley was back in India. His brother Richard wrote that he accepted to become the next Governor General if India and would arrive in the new year. Although he was respected by the current Governor General, he was still a young and junior officer.

“There is much talk about the Tippoo siding with the French. He wants to train an army that will kick us out of India.” He wrote to Richard.

“I eagerly await your arrival. We will be challenged when the weather is better to campaign. Until then, I plan to explore the country. I wish to see Plassey where Clive succeeded. The fields where our armies won and lost are import to understand for battles that we may fight soon. I believe that I is important to know the land and the peoples of Madras. Until you arrive, I will educate myself.

I am able to leave because my regiment is well-trained after Prince of Wales Island and I have good officers to lead them while I am absent.”

“It is as sad day, Tom”

“Yes. Captain Hughes deserved a better death than the flux. At least no one else from the company has it. that grabbed him when we arrived here.”

“Shame it was Hughes. Better if Hakeswill got the flux. Not one of us would miss him.” S

“Kendricks and Lowry would miss him. But, not for very long.”

“They are afraid of Hakeswill. Do his bidding. Have to watch all of them. Hughes didn’t yield to Hakeswill’s tricks.” S

“New captain for Hakeswill to try to fool.”

“Yes, Corporal Green says that Captain Morris will move from Number Five Company. Green doesn’t think much of him.” S

“Men from Five Company say that Morris likes his drink. Major Shee does too. Morris is under Shee. Maybe Morris convinced Shee to convince Wesley to move him to us.”

“Or Shee wants to get rid of Morris. But, it was Sherbrooke that says who comes and goes for now. Fitzgerald says Wesley has gone to explore India.” S

“Well, we will find out soon enough, Dick.”

“Back to army life here in India. Wear the red coats and stocks again. Hot. Stink. Wait and watch. Not like that island, Tom.”

“No, two months on that island was fun.”

“Yes, Tom. Island was fun.”
