Summary: BIG STORY: Life in London during 1780’s. Gordon riots. British army growing pains in new war. 33rd regiment gets new Lieutenant Colonel – Arthur Wellesley. Battalion sent to Ostend in Belgium minus the Light and Grenadier Companies, which had been detached for service in the West Indies. Main British force under Lord Moira had arrived five days earlier and had marched off towards Ghent. Wellesley learns how to command a brigade and forms ideas how to command an army.

SMALL STORY: Sharpe’s mother is killed by army during riots. He is placed in workhouse.
Sharpe runs away when he is sold to a chimneysweep. Taken in by Maggie Joyce. Learns how to steal.
Kills Maggie's client who is beating Maggie. Client is connected. Runs to Yorkshire. Works at coaching inn. Kills the owner of the coaching inn with a knife over a serving girl. Runs away.
Meets Obadiah Hakeswill for the first time. Joins the army’s 33rd regiment. Trains at Halifax. Joins the battalion in Ireland. Goes with battalion to Netherlands with Duke of York’s army. Distinguishes himself during the fighting at Boxtel. Promoted to corporal, then demoted. Returns to England.
